Walter Harrison Scholarships awarded

leven Georgia high school seniors have been awarded
2018 Walter Harrison Scholarships by local electric membership cooperatives (EMCs).
The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to motivated high school students and college undergraduates who
are involved in their community and exhibit exceptional
academic performance, including grade-point average, SAT
scores and scholastic honors. The candidates' financial need
is also a factor.
The scholarship can be applied to any accredited two- or
four-year university, college or vocational-technical school
in Georgia.

Derek Huell, Columbus High School in Columbus,
son of Dan and Bernice Huell of Midland, Flint
Energies (Reynolds). He plans to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and study
neuroscience.

This year's recipients are:
Caleb Alexander, Stephens County High School
in Toccoa, son of Patsy Alexander of Toccoa,
Hart EMC (Hartwell). He plans to attend Georgia
Southern University in Statesboro before going to
veterinary school.

Kathryn Santos, Westwood High School in Camilla, daughter of Eric and Laura Santos of Camilla,
Mitchell EMC (Camilla). She plans to attend the
University of Georgia in Athens before going to
dental school.

Maison Clouatre, Habersham Central High School
in Mount Airy, son of Mitchell and Ashley Clouatre
of Mount Airy, Habersham EMC (Clarkesville). He
plans to attend Mercer University in Macon to pursue a degree in electrical engineering.

Zahraw Shah, Northgate High School in Newnan,
daughter of Noor and Farzana Shah of Newnan,
Coweta-Fayette EMC (Newnan). She plans to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta
before going to medical school.

Megan Freeman, Chestatee High School in
Gainesville, daughter of Jonathan and Maria Freeman of Gainesville, Jackson EMC (Jefferson). She
plans to attend Emory University in Atlanta and
then go to law school.

Trevor Thomas, Banks County High School in
Homer, son of Tiffani Thomas of Homer, Jackson
EMC (Jefferson). He plans to attend the University
of North Georgia in Gainesville before transferring
to another four-year university and later medical
school.

Diana Ha, Newton High School in Covington,
daughter of Ut Ha and Yen Nhi Vo of Conyers,
Snapping Shoals EMC (Covington). She plans to
attend Georgia State University's Newton Campus
before transferring to Emory University in Atlanta
to study biology and then pursue a medical degree.
Marley Hamby, Dawson County High School in
Dawsonville, daughter of Jason and Beth Hamby
of Dawsonville, Amicalola EMC (Jasper). She
plans to attend the University of Georgia in Athens
and ultimately go to medical school.
Sam Horton, Washington County High School in
Sandersville, son of Floyd and Beverli Horton of
Sandersville, Washington EMC (Sandersville).
He plans to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta to earn a degree in mechanical
engineering.
August 2018

James Wood, Callaway High School in Hogansville, son of Suzyanti Wood of LaGrange,
Diverse Power (LaGrange). He plans to attend
the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta before earning a master's degree and ultimately a
doctoral degree in computer science.

The Walter Harrison Scholarship was created in 1985
by the board of directors of Tucker-based Georgia EMC, the
trade association representing the 41 electric cooperatives,
Georgia Transmission Corp., Oglethorpe Power Corp. and
Georgia System Operations Corp. The scholarship is named
in memory of Walter Harrison, a pioneer in the rural electricity movement and a leader at the local, state and national
levels in electric cooperative programs.
The scholarship is funded by Georgia's electric cooperatives, using money raised through an annual silent auction.
