Two iconic Georgia institutions
are celebrating milestone birthdays
this year: The Georgia Archives in
Morrow marks its centennial, and The
Varsity in Atlanta will host its 90th anniversary party on Aug. 18. Both are
noted for the personal connections
they've forged with residents.
Every state is required to have an
archive to hold the official records of
government. All offer treasure-troves
of information for public employees and private citizens alike. At the
Georgia Archives, one can trace the
history of colonial and state legislation, pore over tax and property records, or do genealogical research.

series, genealogy workshops and
special tours to commemorate the

Like the old Amtrak slogan says,
there's something magical about a
train. That's as true for model trains
as it is for passenger varieties, but if
you don't know the difference between HO and N scales you're probably not fully under the spell.

Follow-up from My Georgia
I'm writing to express my gratitude to GEORGIA Magazine. When
Associate Editor Amy Schneider
learned that I was going to fly in a
B-17 to honor my uncle, a navigator
during World War II, she said that I
had to write about it. The story appeared in the My Georgia column in
May. [See "In search of the uncle I
never knew," May 2018, page 35; bit.
ly/myga518.]
Ever since then, things have been
happening. I heard from several people who responded positively to that
article. I joined the 100th Bomb
Group Foundation, and that organization reprinted my article in its summer 2018 Splasher Six publication.
From that reprint, I've heard from the
sons of two members of my uncle's
crew and seen photos of his plane,
and I have read mission and accident
reports and memoirs of other crew
members.
I can honestly say I know so
much more about my uncle, James
V. Goss, and those who served in
the Mighty Eighth Air Force now.
Thank you all for helping me on
this surprising and heartfelt journey. It has been a privilege.
I encourage anyone who
wants to know more about a deceased relative's military service
to visit museums and talk to their
archivists, to find military associations and groups that honor
specific types of service and to
search military records, many of
which are now online. I believe you'll
find it rewarding.
