PHG is studying issues related to unexpected findings through its Realising Genomics in Clinical Practice study, focused on addressing ethical, legal, and social challenges raised by genomic testing. A final report is set for release this fall. Stakeholders have agreed that incidental findings policy will need to address the potential impact of genomic tests, the benefits and burdens to individuals and society, any safeguards that should be imposed, and the wider acceptability of such screening. "The expectation is that policy will be led primarily from professional organizations (for clinicians) and research organizations," Alison Hall, the PHG Foundation's program lead (humanities), told Clinical OMICs. She thinks it is unlikely that government will be involved directly, though the government's 100,000 Genomes Project has an Ethics Advisory Group likely to issue its own guidance on incidental findings. Realising Genomics is also unlikely to offer standards for validating clinical findings, though Hall added: "I suspect that we will be making a strong statement that resources for validation and clinical support should be in place if these technologies are to be offered clinically within public health systems."
