Bicyclists, pedestrians, fishermen, equestrians, and other recreation enthusiasts Why and How? This trail is a Rails-to-Trails project, which is built in the Aspen branch of the historic Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW) right-of-way corridor. Train operations in this corridor ceased in phases, between the 1960s and the mid-1990s. In 1997, the right-of-way corridor was purchased with a combination of funding by local governments, Great Outdoors Colorado, Pitkin County Open Space and Trails, and the Colorado Department of Transportation. The Buzz: During the summer of 2007, Colorado’s famous Ride the Rockies used a portion of the trail for their leg of the ride from Glenwood Springs to Aspen. It was described by some riders as one of the most scenic and beautiful sections of the ride in years. Access: The Rio Grande Trail can be accessed from multiple locations along the Hwy 82 corridor. Access points are designated on the Rio Grande Trail map, available at the Glenwood chamber Visitor Center, or at rfta.com. | || | Biking the Ca nyon http://rfta.com
