Arizona Professional Golf Tournaments FBR Open - Hole #16 The professional tour action heats up in Phoenix and Tucson from January to April. Hope runs high for the coming season, and early efforts bring high expectations. Rookies are taking their first steps on tour, and the veterans return to lead and defend. FBR Open The FBR Open (formerly the Phoenix Open) is perhaps one of the best known tournaments on the PGA Tour and definitely gathers the largest crowds on the tour. The Phoenix Open began in 1932 but was discontinued after the 1935 event. The tournament was revived thanks to the energy and vision of Bob Goldwater, Sr. An avid golfer, he cajoled his fellow Thunderbirds into running the event, and his persuasive manner was successful. In 1939, Bob Goldwater’s new golf tournament was the official rebirth of the Phoenix Open. Local players dominated the 2007 FBR Open. Winner Aaron Baddeley (-21) lives in Scottsdale, while Jeff Quinney (20/3rd) lives in Scottsdale and attended Arizona State University. Billy Mayfair (17/5th) lives at the TPC Scottsdale and also attended Arizona State University. The 2008 FBR Open was held at the TPC Scottsdale, Jan 31st - Feb 3rd. FE5 Accenture Match Play Championship The World Golf Championships Accenture Match Play Championship is one of four World Golf Championships events which debuted in 1999. Eligibility for the Accenture Match Play Championship is limited to the top 64 available players from the Official World Golf Ranking. Past champions include Tiger Woods, Jeff Maggert, Steve Stricker, Darren Clarke, and defending champion Henrik Stenson. The 2008 Accenture Match Play Championship will be played at the Galler y at Dove Mountain in Marana (just north of Tucson), February 18-24, and features an $8 million purse. The Galler y Golf Club, South Course is a John Fought-design that opened in December 2003. The 7,351-yard, par-72 layout will provide a challenging test for the best players in the world. Safeway International The Safeway International is one of the premier stops on the LPGA tour, offering a $1.5 million purse and attracting the sport’s brightest stars, like Lorena Ochoa and Annika Sorenstam. Since 1983, more than $12 million in tournament proceeds have been distributed to nonprofit organizations in Arizona, with the majority of funds directed to Banner Health’s cancer care programs on behalf of Safeway Foundation. The 2008 tournament, scheduled for March 24-30, will be held at Superstition Mountain Golf and Countr y Club and broadcast on the Golf Channel.
