GRAMMY® - Fall 2011 - (Page 2) From The President/CEO s the saying goes, change is the only constant. But it would be hard to predict we’d reach a point when things would be changing so constantly. That’s the technological world the music industry has been grappling with for the last decade-plus, and the growing pains have been obvious. Each new opportunity comes with a set of challenges and a learning curve that can be dangerous at highway speeds. But it’s not just the music industry that has to navigate these curves. The tech companies ride their own roller coaster as they develop new services to help fans get access to the music they love, and we’ve seen a number of services come and go as new business models and concepts are rolled out, some connecting with fans, others failing to gain traction. The last decade has brought us a whole new world of music access, from inexpensive digital downloads to Internet radio and streaming music services. But one thing that’s becoming increasingly clear is that this is an ever-evolving business, and each new service creates its own spin on how it thinks fans want to consume music. Given these fast-paced changes, in this issue we’ve rounded up a select list of digital music providers, with concise descriptions of what they do, and even try to look into the crystal ball and analyze the chances for the services’ survival given the tumultuous digital music space. Our ultimate goal is twofold: to give readers a broad-based, general guide outlining the tremendous ways to access music digitally today, and to show that legitimate music services that engage fans and compensate creators continue to grow and evolve in excitingly creative ways. And that has been our hope at The Recording Academy. Utilizing our advocacy efforts on behalf of our members on Capitol Hill and our unique position to help foster discussion and cooperation, we’ve worked to facilitate dialogue between the music and tech industries in pursuit of robust services that also pay artists fairly. By working together on services that are beneficial to both businesses, the music industry, tech industry and the fans will all be winners. I suspect the services listed in this issue are just the start of what we can build together.
