Beaty avoids “you’re special” clichés by focusing on Iggy’s restless mind, a square peg in a round hole of color-in-the-lines expectations. The rhyming text soars, while Roberts’ stylized, retro art teems with famous architecture and smart-looking kids. —Anne Boles Levy Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, the movie: Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) is 10-yearold Kit, who lives in a boarding house owned by her parents in Depression-era Cincinnati. Kit dreams of becoming a writer in this first theater-release of the American Girl films (the first three went straight to TV). We recommend a full-scale outing: granddaughters and friends to an early showing, followed by dinner in a “real restaurant.” And, of course, we’re not much for small talk: This is a perfect opportunity to talk about the era of the Great Depression (brush up beforehand) and wonder aloud if material things make one truly happy…?
