For tour schedule: www.troutmusic.com. My grandchildren came up with this little idea. In our guest/grandkids room, we have a TV on which I record certain programs. I keep a block of Postit Notes and a pen nearby to write the date and program on the front of the videotape. Several years ago, my oldest granddaughters started writing me messages on the Post-its and putting them up on the dresser mirror for me to find after they went home. The idea caught on, and all five of my grandkids (who now range in age from 7 to 19) periodically left messages. Even friends who stayed with us left notes! Eventually, the mirror was filled, and I put the memos in a small scrapbook. Some of the messages are funny; others bring tears to my eyes. I treasure them all. And best of all, the mirror is filling up again. —Dee Hamill, Red Bluff, California Frosty retreat “Beautiful. And frigid,” said one guest grand at Canada’s Ice Hotel, 20 minutes west of Quebec. It takes six weeks to build, and it’s rebuilt every year. At the Hôtel de Glace grandparents can enjoy vodka “in” the rocks (the “glass” is made of ice) while the kids have hot chocolate. Then you can dance in your warm clothing at the disco, or admire the ice chandelier (how does it stay up there?). The beds are surprisingly comfortable, and don’t worry—the inside part is made of wood, with a foam padding on top. The rooms consist only of ice beds and 12-inch thick walls. Activities outside the hotel include cross-country skiing, ice-fishing, snowshoeing, dogsledding and skating. Or you can simply stay warm by eating. Was it beautiful? Breathtaking! Worth it?
