Glow, Little GloFish Larry Freimark of Portland, Oregon, has three grandchildren— who live in Iowa. “I’m going out to see them this fall,” he says, “and I was looking for an unusual present, something I could put together for them. Hey, it’s GloFish. First, the whole setup— you just add water—comes in the mail, so I can have it sent to their place before I get there. Everything arrives in one tidy box—although for a grandpa like me, the instructions could have been in darker, bigger type! First, there’s an envelope of the guppy-size fish, nine of them: three orange, three yellow and three red, some kind of genetically enhanced zebrafish that glow in the dark; and with them comes this tank that holds about two gallons of water at the most—a great, compact aquarium for an apartment or a kid’s room. There’s 60-90 days’ worth of filters and food that will last at least 90 days. You add some sterilizer to your own tap water to take care of chloride or anything else that could hurt the fish. And the tank has LED lights to make them glow, at three different settings. I’m thinking the middle setting is perfect for when a kid is hanging out in his room, and then you come in, say goodnight, and turn it down. Then, it’s a soft glow, very subtle, a perfect night-light. Setup is an adult job; it takes about two hours because you have to gradually introduce the fish to the water. And the fish are responsive! They get active very quickly. Oh, and another thing, the flow filter is not the bubbling kind, so the noise doesn’t drive you crazy.
