Currently a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, he has always considered himself as being in a pro tem position, due to an utter lack of faith in himself. He promises, however, to keep trying. Among his achievements during the effort are attachments to three Pulitzers, two National Headliner Awards, an Ernie Pyle Award and other, less notable honors; also, a dozen books, a television movie, many TV pilots and episodes, the creation of two primetime TV series, and a variety of hymns, psalms and odes he shares with no one. He has a wife, Joanne, whom he calls by her maiden name, Cinelli, three grown children, five grandchildren, a dog, a street cat, a turtle and a bad-natured squirrel that lives in an oak tree outside his home in the Santa Monica village of Topanga. Ruth Nathan, Ph.D., (“Everything Was Fine Until You Showed Up,” page 50) works at UC Berkeley as a research scientist, but says her “best job” is taking care of her grandchildren. For fun she builds and maintains “all sorts” of gardens and swims as many laps as she can every day. Edenskiss.com). “Just So We Know” is a regular feature in this magazine; Michelle is also a published poet. She and her husband, Tracy, and daughters, Corabelle and Sasha, live in Ferndale, California. Jackie Clements-Marenda (“Confessions of a Backyard Grand,” page 34) was born in Brooklyn into a close-knit family whose appetite for eclectic literature provided a diverse literary diet from Nancy Drew and the Bible to Shakespeare and Zane Grey. She is a grandmother of two and is currently working on a multigenerational saga set in post-World-War-II Brooklyn. 800-810-0260 PRODUCT REVIEWS Please visit www.grandmagazine.com or products@grandmagazine.com Mail samples for review to GRAND Magazine Editorial, 989 Milton, #3D, Ferndale, California 95536 Please visit www.grandmagazine.com Printed in the USA by RR Donnelley GRAND Media, LLC, allows carefully screened third parties to rent the GRAND subscriber file from time to time. She and her husband, Gary, escaped the urban hubbub of Austin, Texas, a couple of years ago to live the good life in Deep East Texas (and have never looked back). Debbie is the mother of five children—ages 33 to 3 (no, that’s not a typo). Two of the kids (Katie, 3, and Michael, 12) are still at home, and she and Gary have three beautiful grandsons who visit often. “My house has been childproof for 30 years and apparently always will be!” says Debbie. 6 GRAND MAY JUNE 2008 Magazine Publishers of America 6 GRAND SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2008 http://www.grandmagazine.com http://www.Babble.com http://www.blogspot.com http://www.PrairiePoetry.com http://www.grandmagazine.com http://www.Edenskiss.com http://www.grandmagazine.com
