Later, she was able to attend a school of art and languages; later still, after she had moved to America, she studied Chinese water coloring and oil painting, and wrote poetry. As a long-distance grandmother— her grandchildren, Leif and Antonia, live in California, and Barbara lives in Florida—she decided to write and illustrate a book about her life: When I Was Little in the Old Country. When I was little in the Old Country, my grandfather was almost a dandy, so carefully would he dress, always with a jacket and tie, and his shoes were shined to a high gloss. He took great care of his shoes, which he polished until the leather was buttery soft. They lasted him for many years. He was a fine-tool mechanic and he could take apart any watch or any clock and clean all the parts and put it back together again. Each day, he wound up his big grandfather clock with a large, shiny key. The grandfather clock chimed every hour. Barbara Knauf grew up with her mother and three siblings in a suburb of Berlin, Author and illustrator and grandmother Barbara Knauf with grandson Leif and granddaughter Antonia. O’healthy Freezer dinners were a big treat when we were kids—never mind that the mashed potatoes from my mother’s stove were a thousand percent better than the filmy mush of those ’50s Swanson specials—and kids still like the quick surprise of an all-in-one dish.
