GRAND Magazine - November/December 2008 - (Page 8) contributors Sharon Kratz (“Foreign Exchange,” page 48) and her husband, Joe, are sailboat cruisers. They raised their two daughters and worked in Indiana until 1997, when Joe retired from General Motors. They moved to the Clear Lake, Texas, area and worked as contractors to NASA while they learned how to live aboard a 35-foot British sailboat. “We were late-in-life sailors,” laughs Sharon. “We had no idea what we were doing!” In 2004 they joined the community of retirees who sail the Caribbean as an alternative retirement lifestyle. “We had sailed from the U.S. to Mexico, then Belize, and up a small river in Guatemala for hurricane season when our daughter decided to adopt a Guatemalan baby,” she says.
