GRAND Magazine - November/December 2008 - (Page 80) grand finale I saw you first To Gabriel Born 2/13/08 I didn’t know when I was sixteen, driving fast, listening to loud music with my long hair flying that you would be my grandson. I didn’t know that I would have my own little red-headed baby And that she would be your mother. Your young wife will lie by your side in the morning light vigilant as you sleep watching your chest rise then fall. She’ll be mesmerized by the outline of your upper lip and the crook at the top of your ear. She’ll think she’s the only one to ever really know your face, but I saw you first. Only a glimpse of the crown of your head as my daughter labored to push you into the world, then as your father placed you in my arms, I looked into your eyes. I saw you first. —Terry Spaeth photo by Cristian ardelean 80 GRAND NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2008
