GRAND Magazine - January 2009 - (Page 17) Give Your Granddaughter the Gift of Confidence The expert gang Whatever your teen’s taste, there’s a graphic novel out there that will satisfy, says Teri Lesesne, professor in the department of Library Science at Sam Houston State University in Texas. Teri is the author of a great chapter on what teens read in a recent (2007) book, Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice (edited by Kylene Beers and others). In Bone, part of a series by Jeff Smith, says Teri, we have easy reading with archetypical characters, nondescript settings and predictable plots. On the other hand, there are more difficult graphic novels, such as Persepolis (now a movie), by Marjane Satrapi. This is a story of an Iranian girl who was sent to Europe for safety at the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war. A title for teens, parents and grandparents would be Good-bye, Chunky Rice, by Craig Thompson, in which readers learn that leaving something precious allows something new to be discovered. For even more titles of graphic novels, go to the Young Adult Library Services Association Web site for its first issue! FREE “Rest assured that this magazine is not fluff! I read many of the articles and was amazed at the quality of information and guidance given.” –BONITA G. Teens are also reading mixed-genre books. For example, Lesesne mentions Weetzie, by Francesca Lia Block, which is considered magical realism because it combines realistic fiction, elements of traditional literature, and fantasy—a perfect choice for teens who find fantasy worlds difficult to enter. Consider, too, Whittington, a Newbery Honor book written by Alan Armstrong, which combines the traditional story of Dick Whittington and his cat with animal fantasy and contemporary realistic fiction. Teens are also enjoying books with multiple narrators, which add levels of complexity to a story. For example, Street Love, by Walter Dean Myers, tells the story of a star athlete and a teen strapped with caring for her younger sister and her Alzheimer’s-stricken grandmother. Both are narrators. Other popular examples are Criss Cross (2006 Newbery Medal winner), by Lynne Rae Perkins; Poison Ivy, by Amy Goldman Koss; and the Dark Fusion series, by Neal Shusterman: Red Rider’s Hood, Duckling Ugly and Dread Locks. This series melds fairy tales, myths and legends, where werewolf gangs and vampires often traipse. Great for the younger YA crowd. Go ahead, stock your “grand teen library.” You’re cool.
