Her journalism career began at community newspapers in the wine country of Sonoma County, California; she had a 35-year career as a commercial photographer in San Francisco. Ten years ago she moved to Arizona to live “off the grid.” Betsey, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, has won a number of journalism awards, including a first place for beat reporting in the 2004 Arizona Press Club contest. Jim Thompson (“Help! My Grandson’s Being Raised a Vegan!” page 24) lives in upstate New York with his wife, Jennifer, their son, Sam, and two dogs. He manages a nonprofit program that finds employment for individuals with disabilities, is involved with the local food movement and, whenever possible, likes to hide out at the nearby vegan cafe. http:// jockeystreet.blogspot.com Carol Wall (“Leader of the Pack,” page 32) is a freelance writer whose essays and articles have been featured over many years in publications such as Southern Living magazine and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In addition to penning humorous first-person accounts on topics relating to daily life, she has developed a diverse network of professional contacts for assistance in writing about more serious issues impacting the challenges faced by young families today. Emily Netburn (“My Sunshine,” page 42) is in the sixth grade at Forest Glen Middle School, Coral Springs, Florida. She lives with her parents, David and Nicole, and her brother, Harrison, and their golden retriever, Buddy. Both sets of grandparents live nearby in Boynton Beach. Emily, an avid reader, plays soccer and electric guitar. Jim Loomis (“Happy Rails to You…,” page 34) is a retired advertising executive who has lived in Hawaii for 46 years—meaning he’s had to fly across 2,300 miles of ocean to take longdistance train rides…. And he’s still managed to log nearly 200,000 miles on Amtrak across the U.S. and VIA rail trains in Canada. Jim is the author of All Aboard! The Complete North American Train Travel Guide (Prima Life Styles, 1998; a third, newly revised edition will be in bookstores, soon, Jim promises). Ruth Nathan (“Weekly Readers,” page 16) works at UC Berkeley as a research scientist but says her “best job” is taking care of her grandchildren. For fun she builds and maintains “all sorts” of gardens and swims as many laps as she can every day. Ruth received her Ph.D. in reading from Oakland University, where she also co-directed their psychology department’s Reading Research Laboratory. You’ll find publications by Ruth in such diverse journals as Child Development, Reading Research Quarterly, and Language Arts. She’s also written 8 GRAND JANUARY 2009 several books and chapters on literacy, including the national bestseller The Beginnings of Writing (Allyn and Bacon), now going into its fourth edition. Ruth makes her home in Alamo, California, with her husband, Larry. Ruth is currently interested in interactive talking books that allow children to listen to or read a favorite story on their own. “Some are excellent!” she says. “They’re the next new development in information technology for little kids.” Angela Mihm Nigro (“Virtual Scrapbooking,” page 36) is a writer and mother who lives in Madison, Wisconsin. This article was sparked by her desire to preserve memories from one generation to the next. Judyann Grant (“Can We Sleep Over?” page 18) lives in Mannsville, New York, has three picture books under contract and is currently revising her first children’s novel. Jeanne Sager (“Baby, Bath & Beyond,” page 20) lives in upstate New York and is a regular contributor to parenting magazines. Patty Friedmann (“A Scaffold for Kids’ Hopes,” page 11) is the author of Side Effects, Secondhand Smoke, Eleanor Rushing and Odds, as well as the first post-Katrina novel, A Little Bit Ruined. Stage productions under the direction of Carl Walker are The Accidental Jew and Lovely Rita. She was included in The Great American Writers Cookbook and Christmas Stories from Louisiana in 2003, as well as in the collections My New Orleans in 2005 and Intersections in 2006.
