What is valued: emotional development. Every time we work with our grandchildren, we’re helping them see what we value. Baking cookies together beats buying them. Making a bed together is more fun than making it alone. Being kind to a spider crawling on the windowsill shows them we value balance in nature. This handy booklet is filled with activities for children from infancy through age 5. Ready, Set, Grow! A Kid’s Guide to Gardening by Rebecca Spohn (Good Year Books, 2007) is filled with fun facts, puzzles and projects, jokes, recipes, crafts and a green-themed reading list. Zimbbos! Elephantastic Pyramids from Blue Orange Games has us building pyramids from wooden elephants, which supports our grandchild’s learning of number order and balance. Pengoloo: The Fun South Pole Eggspedition! from Blue Orange Games strengthens memory and teaches color concepts and number order. Clay Play from Melissa and Doug’s Classic Wooden Toys is the best set of rollers, hammers and carving tools I’ve ever used with Play-Doh-type material. Animal Bingo from eeBoo teaches taking turns, the skill of matching, and animal names. Zingo! Bingo with a Zing from ThinkFun has categories such as parts of the body, animals and foods.
