Join us at Friends of GRAND on Facebook British PrototyPe “She was the grandmother to a nation.” British artist Paul Day, referring to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the “Queen Mother,” who died in the U.K. in 2002 at the age of 101. In February, a national memorial of friezes (by Day) and sculpture (by Philip Jackson) was unveiled in London . Welcome back We’re calling this a Depression, even if no one else is, because then we can label the last 70 years of U.S. economic history as R2D2 (two recessions, two depressions). We’ll go a long way for a joke. In the meantime, guess what the lack o’ jack is bringing back? 1. Popcorn. Jalapeño, peanut butter, tropical fruit, dill pickle, and our fave: popcorn cakes, inspired by a grandmother in Granbury, Texas . 2. Gelatine. Yeah, we know, the current spelling is “gelatin,” but we don’t know why, since the 1933 Knox Gelatine cookbook Dainty Desserts for Dainty People has been a staple in our house since…you do the math. Good source of protein, when it’s not loaded with sugar and chemicals. In other words, buy the old stuff in the orange box and do it yourself. Kids don’t remember the ‘50s; they think strawberries and cream cheese in real-cherry-juice gelatine is rad, smokin’, neat, groovy, and the bee’s knees. 3. Dominoes. Three-year-olds can ace Dora’s dominoes (not the cardboard kind—what a disaster) and upwards of 6, they’re ready for the real game. Go to the bone pile! What’s more: you can have dominoes personalized with family photographs . Not to mention the curiosity of keeping score on the cribbage board that you could buy for G’dad’s Father’s Day present and have it do double duty.
