couple devoted all their time to the children, doing fun activities to help them through the transition. “These kids really deserve better,” Hank would say. “We kept asking ourselves, what can we do to be supportive?” Then, within a few months, their house in Atlanta was burglarized, and they lost all their possessions. It became clear that the new plan would be to sell the house in Atlanta and make a new life with Steven and Stephanie in Florida. “Lo and behold,” as Pamela often says, “just at that time, the nursery next door to the little house came up for sale. We had already decided that we wanted to raise the children the way we had been raised in Ohio, where every house had a family garden, and everyone would can and freeze. I had always been interested in herbs and thought we could grow herbs and flowers in the greenhouses. The rest of the land was leased out to plant brokers, and was wall-to-wall potted landscape plants.” But this was just as the housing boom began to fall apart in 2004, and there wasn’t much business for landscapers. Pamela and Hank went over to the nursery and talked with the owner. They agreed upon a price, Pamela and Hank gave the owner a $100 bill as a deposit, and they wrote up the sales agreement by hand. Pamela went to a workshop to learn about what she needed to do to grow herbs that were certified organic . There, she met the owner of a nearby organic family farm and learned for the first time about Community Supported Agriculture. “That was perfect for us,” she says, “because the farmer gets paid at the beginning of the season by the subscribers, and then delivers the produce during the season as it is harvested. This way, we know there is a market for our produce in advance and can plant to meet our needs.” The next challenge was learning about growing plants in Florida, where the climate is upside-down from Ohio . Pamela and Hank and Steven and Stephanie cleared the land themselves, a bit at a time. “We made it an adventure,” says Pamela. “We would take a picnic and learn the names of the plants and the bugs. It was hard labor, but it was also fun. We all love working together. We still do everything with the kids. People ask, don’t you want some time alone? And we say no, we don’t. We love being with our grandchildren.” In addition to working around the farm, Steven and Stephanie give tours when schoolchildren and Scouts come to visit the farm. They know the plants and can explain the “magic Harry Potter potion” used to support the sprouting of seeds. They also hand out recipes for preparing the foods harvested from the farm . The grandkids are always on hand for the harvest and distribution of food. (Subscribers come directly to the farm to pick up their baskets.) Thriving on the farm, loving and Stephanie and Steven work in the vegetable gardens after school. Stephanie is sitting by an antique wagon that has been in the family for over a century.
