At 54, suffering from crippling arthritis, Bolden is in pain most of the time, but that hasn’t stopped her from using her cane and walker in a search for others who are weary of the blood spilled on the streets and sidewalks in an area that Colden Avenue was a has become one of the fortress of metal fences and most dangerous in Los barred windows. Assisted by highpowered public relations agencies, they do what they can from a safe distance to call attention to the peril of the families at risk. The difference between them and Bolden is that she lives on the very street—Colden Avenue—that is the border separating the turfs of the Bloods and the Crips. The tension is always high. To wear the wrong “colors” (red for the Bloods, blue for the Crips) in the wrong area is trouble. When I visited Bolden in her home, the street bristled with danger. A man in gang attire stared at me from his doorway. Eyes peered from curtained windows. A black pit bull, barricaded on a nearby porch, followed my movements from car to Bolden’s duplex. Colden Avenue was a fortress of metal fences and barred windows. Police and school officials have acknowledged Bolden’s efforts but have taken no action. Parents of murdered children have encouraged her. Former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman saw her online “crime scene” and urged her to “keep punching.” She’s doing just that by sending videos to television talk shows, by distributing flyers all over town and by telling anyone willing to listen that the time has come to join “Grandma Weezie’s Army” in the war against violence. She knows it won’t cause the Bloods or Crips to disband, she says, but it will “stir things up” and make her neighbors conscious of their responsibilities to children. “I’ll never give up on that,” she says, leaning on a cane in the doorway of her duplex. “That’s for sure.” G 24 GRAND MAY 2009
