Deciphered directions. When the teacher is not available to clarify instructions, even written directions pose problems because the context is absent. What to do? Ask questions. Your grandchild may tell you she has “reading homework.” “Reading” is very broad; get the specifics: Is it vocabulary, spelling? This sheds new light on how to do the assignment. Always follow up by repeating what you think you heard your grandkids say. Encourage them to turn in something. It shows initiative. Organization. Remind your grandkids to number the directions. An assignment can seem overwhelming until you help by breaking down the directions into manageable portions. To help the kids get ready to work, clean out those backpacks and pencil boxes. Rewards. Together, decorate a shoebox or tackle box (recycle one!). Equip it with the usual items (rulers, pencils, erasers, blunt scissors, stickers to reward good work, etc.) Be generous with praise and stickers. Being present. Everyone’s familiar with “Go to your room and do your homework.” That makes homework sound like punishment. Instead, clear the table, sit alongside your grandchild and do your “homework,” whether it be reading a magazine, knitting a sweater or preparing a speech. Research shows background music may be conducive. No TV. If you are checking homework online or by phone, ask your grandchild to e-mail a sample or to read a portion back to you. Laura S.
