1. She’s a spoiler! While Marian Robinson enforces her daughter’s rules of bedtime at 8:30 and organic foods for Malia and Sasha when she’s in their home, all bets are off when the girls are at their grandmother’s Chicago digs. She told the Boston Globe, “I have candy, they stay up late…they watch TV as long as they want to, we’ll play games until the wee hours. I do everything that grandmothers do that they’re not supposed to do.” 2. She’s fit! Mrs. Robinson ran the 50- and 100-yard dashes in the Illinois senior games in her 60s. She loves yoga—especially in classes taught by her younger brother Stephen. 3. She’s feeling some separation anxiety these days. At an Education Department’s weekly summer reading series last July, Mrs. Robinson admitted that she was lately beginning to “feel left out” because the Obama girls were growing up so fast and starting to spend more time away from their grandmother. 4. She’s self-effacing! Just ask her daughter. Michelle Obama told Essence magazine, “She completely underestimates her role in who I am. She always says, ‘You came here that way. I just stayed out of the way.’ That’s not how I saw it.” 5. Education is a big priority for her. Neither Marian Robinson nor her husband, Fraser, finished college. It became a major regret in her life. She used this as a life lesson to her daughter and son, encouraging them to get their degrees—they both attended Princeton.
