T
he General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) is a nonprofit organization that brings together local women's clubs in a collective effort to strengthen
communities and to enhance the lives of others through volunteer service. With
members in affiliated clubs in every state, the District of Columbia, and more than
a dozen countries, GFWC members are community leaders who work locally to
create global change by supporting the arts, preserving natural resources, advancing education, promoting healthy lifestyles, encouraging civic involvement,
and working toward world peace and understanding.
Founded in 1890, GFWC's roots trace back
to 1868 when pioneering journalist Jane Cunningham Croly attempted to attend a dinner at
an all-male press club honoring British novelist
Charles Dickens. Croly was denied admittance
based upon her gender. In response, she formed
a woman's club-Sorosis. Twenty years later,
Jane Croly invited women's clubs throughout the
United States to pursue the cause of federation,
and in 1890, 63 clubs officially formed the General Federation of Women's Clubs.
Since then, GFWC has been a force in both
local and global communities. Our accomplishments over the past 124 years have been
many, including establishing 75 percent of the
country's public libraries, developing kindergartens in public schools, and working for food
and drug regulation. As a national leader in the
fight to end domestic violence, GFWC launched
the GFWC Success for Survivors Scholarship in 2011. These scholarships help survivors
obtain a post-secondary education, offering

them the chance to reshape their future by securing employment and gaining personal independence.
Our motto-Unity in Diversity-reflects the
diversity of both our programs and members.
GFWC members are mothers and daughters;
business, professional, and community leaders; and women of diverse interests, talents,
and backgrounds. Clubwomen from ages 12
to 102 live in cities, suburbs, and rural areas
around the globe.
GFWC is distinguished from other service organizations by the breadth of our outreach. Our
community service programs span myriad
areas: arts, conservation, education, home life,
public issues, and international outreach. In collaboration with our national program partners,
we provide grants, materials, and information
that assist member clubs in creating and sustaining worthwhile projects.
