S
pending time with my 15-monthold grandson, Theo during our visit
this past week opened my heart and
mind to places that have been clogged
and distracted for way too long.
We live in different states so visiting
is vital. I look at and listen to things, yes,
but it's Theo who really sees and hears
without distraction. He spies a person
walking down the sidewalk and it calls
for a joyful celebration. He bangs his
little hands on the window and waves his
arms with excitement. He squeals with
delight when eating a blackberry, squishing it in his little hands, rubbing it on his
tiny nose to see how it smells, and then
really tastes each bite. He loves to hug, to
give wet kisses, and to hold hands while
watching Sesame Street. He smiles when
you smile at him and dances when something makes him happy. When I tuck him
in his crib with his favorite blankie and
tell him "Goodnight, I love you Theo," his
eyes say, "I love you too Grandma."
This week I was mindful of not connecting to Email, Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter, Snapchat, and all the other social
media sites that eat up my attention and
time most days. No, this week we made
real connections, not just virtual ones.
We went for long walks and smiled and
