Give a GRAND Gift
waved at people we passed. They smiled
and waved back! We ate together at
the same table, instead of on the couch
watching TV. We read stories together and
learned new words. We laughed, danced
and sang silly songs. Okay, the phone did
come out for Theo and Grandma selfies!
We couldn't resist!
As I headed home, I thought about
ways to continue to living a "connected"
life with Theo, but also with my husband,
my adult children, my parents, siblings,
and friends. Theo's a great teacher!
4 simple tips for longdistance grandparents

Begin at the beginning
Early bonding is important. If possible, arrange to be in the
area when your grandchild is born (with the parent's permission, of
course).
Photographs are perfect
Be sure to provide the parents with pictures of you, especially
pictures of you with your grandchild if possible. Ask them to display
the pictures where your grandchild can see them and show the pictures to your grandchild frequently.
Tapping into technology
Webcams are the cool new tool to connect families that live
apart. Even babies seem to take naturally to webcams. FaceTime
with iPhones or iPads is easy and fun. Skype is the most popular
video calling software. It's easy to set up and kids of all ages love it.
Traditional things to do
Children love getting things in the mail. Handwritten letters
are the best. Greeting cards always good to send. A package is even
more exciting for a child to get in the mail.
Through these and other strategies, you can help build a connection with your grandkids that will help make up for the distance
between you.
