Give a GRAND Gift
Soap in the Ocean,
my grandson calls the clouds. We're on a walk,
scoping the broad sky festooned today
with big bundles of sun-bright vapor coasting
on the high June breeze. He's three
and a half, still pretty new here and every-
everything counts: he squats to a minuscule red flea
making its tiny way on the wide step and the black ant
racing ahead as if it's the hare out-yarding
the lumbering tortoise; points to an errant balloon
twirling above the trees. Questions pile on questions
leaving no time to answer: of the delivery lady's
already-slid-open door before she hops to the curb-
What if she falls out? How come dogs don't get tired
of chasing the same stick? That bird all by himself
up there on the wire...where are his friends?
And sly-eyed, Doesn't some ice cream sound good, Nana?
We head back to the porch, his chocolate, my mocha,
melting fast as the sun sails in and out, our afternoon
waning, the suds above changing shape in that high ocean,
all turquoise, vast, and upside-down, and though
he doesn't know it, his stunning wonder
having crushed my faded celebration of the ordinary.
