V O LU M E 1 3 , I S S U E 3 T HE ME S S E N G E R PAGE 5 Missions, Faith and Action Cleaning for a Reason If you know any woman currently undergoing chemotherapy, please pass the word to her that there is a cleaning service that provides FREE housecleaning - once per month for 4 months while she is in treatment. All she has to do is sign up and have her doctor fax a note confirming the treatment. Cleaning for a Reason will have a participating maid service in her zip code area arrange for the service. This organization serves the entire USA and currently has 547 partners to help these women. It's our job to pass the word and let them know that there are people out there that care. The following projects are the current focus of the UMC initiative: Support of the Mpasa Clinic and Nutrition Center for supplies , staffing and special needs. Provision of a vehicle for patient and supply transport, solar energy, and expansion of the Mpasa site. Transportation – Airplane Replacement $130,000 total. Agriculture – training for Congolese in Zambia. Resource Center Development for the Conference. Communication Resourcing – computers and wireless internet with solar chargers. Nothing But Nets is an international campaign to wipe out malaria. Malaria is preventable, but causes more than 200 million illnesses each year and kills nearly 1 million of those who become infected. So, as engaged global citizens, what can we do to help? In the poorest parts of the world, window screens are lacking, anti-malarial drugs are expensive, and so far an effective malaria vaccine does not exist. Insecticide-treated bed nets in these areas are arguably the most costeffective way to prevent malaria transmission. Bed nets use a simple but effective prevention approach: eliminate contact with mosquitoes, eliminate malaria. GLO Work Day Saturday, February 12, a group of 18 Grandview kids and adults spread the light of the Lord at Gretna Glen Camp. We assembled office furniture, completed some electrical work, worked on drywall, assisted with a large mailing, served a meal, sorted crayons, and in between all that we assembled the sweetheart bags for Grandview’s Homebound friends. Up next for GLO is the annual Community Bike Swap on Saturday, May 14. If you have a bike you’d like to donate, please call Tammy Horning 945-8438 for a pick up. The Summer GLO Experience is scheduled for August 19 - 21, and if you can’t attend, plan to join us Sunday, August 21, for worship on location. Special Communion Offering In March we will be taking a Special Offering on Communion Sunday to benefit the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the antimalaria initiative Nothing But Nets. Please prayerfully discern contributing to these two worthy causes. Democratic Republic of Congo is the third largest African country after Sudan and Algeria. It was called the Belgian Congo from 1908-1960 when it became independent on June 30, 1960. It currently is comprised of 11 Provinces, including Kinshasa (also the Capital City) and it has nine neighboring countries.
