The Messenger Making Gentle A Bruised World DECEMBER 2011 Missions, Faith, & Action Special Communion Offering Sunday, December 4, a Special Communion offering will be taken for iHope, a local Refugee Resettlement Ministry. Grandview has partnered with other local churches to support refugee families in their transition to life in Lancaster. Transportation, bed linens, tutoring, mentoring and friendship are just a few of the very big ways Grandview has embraced the first iHope family since their arrival in June. The youngest of the children are enrolled in school and their oldest sister has a job. Big brother is getting married on Sunday, November 27, at Habecker Mennonite Church and an invitation has been extended to Grandview. Please contact Luci Steele if you are able to attend with her. The next hurdle for the family is to find an apartment. If you are able to help with this task, please contact Nancy Schwabe- Fry ihopehomes@gmail.com. After the family has been moved to their apartment iHope will be busy cleaning and preparing for the next refugee family. If you wanted to and didn’t get a chance to be involved with this family, there will be another chance to help a family transition to life in Lancaster in early spring. Gift Card Reminder Thank you to everybody that faithfully shops with grocery store gift cards. We are grateful to our sales team for making it convenient and simple to participate in the program. Be sure to stock up on gift cards during this busy holiday season so you can get all the items on your grocery list. Remember the Giant cards also can be used for Gas to Go, which has a very competitive price for fuel and the Oregon Dairy cards can be used in the restaurant. The church sells, Giant, Weis, Oregon Dairy, and Darrenkamp cards. One Ministry Door Closes and A New One Opens Gladys McKerns has served the Cradle Roll ministry for just over 40 years. This ministry of our church is perhaps not heard of much, but nonetheless is important. The Cradle Roll is a list inscribed with the names of all the babies born into the church family. It’s a little known fact that Jason Lyons (6/25/1970), the son of Jere and Janet, was the 2nd baby recognized in the Cradle Roll when it began in 1970. Thanks Gladys for your dedication and service as you close the book on your chapter of this quiet ministry. We are excited to share the news that Grandview member Leslie Womeldorf successfully completed the Parish Nurse Basic Course at Eastern Mennonite University and was recognized in a special Commissioning Service in November. As part of her course work Leslie created a Lenten journey program. She has shared this with Parish Nurse Karen Graeff and together they are working with the staff to build our Lenten offerings with the program. When you see Leslie, please congratulate her on opening a new door to the Parish Nurse Ministry. ASP Art Show Many of you took part in multiple ways with the recent art show fundraiser including preparation, planning, set-up, volunteering that day, sharing your art, purchasing items, and the list goes on. It certainly takes a good team to accomplish something like this and Grandview has a tenacious, hard-working, loyal, and enjoyable team. The profit is approximately $7000. Thanks to everybody for their support and encouragement. 5
