Delta Dental Annual Report 2010 - 2

Board Chair
From any perspective, 2010 was a year marked by an economy continuing to struggle and a health care reform act that resists definition. Yet even in the throes of one of the most challenging years we have experienced at Delta Dental of Missouri, we achieved our goals and in the end, realized a rewarding year with a positive bottom line. Delta Dental of Missouri realized more than $52 million in revenue growth during 2010, driven by solid new sales and a 98.5 percent retention rate among existing clients, and our member count held steady. These accomplishments are particularly significant when placed in the context that many of our largest clients were trimming their employee bases this year. By the end of the year, we had enrolled nearly 80,000 new members with 198 new clients such as Breads of the World, Major Brands and Huttig Building Products in Missouri. We are welcoming the University of Missouri and St. Louis Public Schools as new clients in January 2011, and we celebrate large renewing clients such as the Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan. Strong results in our Delta Dental regional office in South Carolina achieved more than 10 percent growth in members, including the cities of Charleston and Columbia. South Carolina also experienced 97.6 percent retention of clients and 10 percent growth in participating dentists. We are proud of our continued growth during challenging times, and we attribute this success to the balance within our organization. The commitment to ensure a positive experience for every customer at any point of service is an integral part of the culture of Delta Dental of Missouri. We view this as a measurement of organizational wellness, and it continues to make a difference for

This was a year of expansion in our benefits footprint as we added new perspectives to our organization. In March we launched SmileChoice®, our dental benefits plan for individuals and their families. For the first time, individuals not covered by a group dental benefits plan were invited to enjoy the advantages of Delta Dental.

our clients, our providers, our producer partners, our community and our employees.

We took another big step in 2010 to expand our product offerings with a broader scope of specialized benefits. The introduction of DeltaVision®1 plans was made possible by our purchase of Advantica EyeCare. As our eye care provider networks develop and we integrate the administrative operations to launch DeltaVision in 2011, we are confident this represents another opportunity to deliver valued benefits to our clients, producers and providers. At the same time, we are working to unify our for-profit subsidiaries Essex Dental Benefits, Advantica EyeCare and Bridgeport Dental Services under the banner of Advantica2. We also took steps to eliminate confusion in our marketplace, streamline operations and strengthen the Delta Dental brand by transitioning the operations of the Missouri business of Essex Dental Benefits to Delta Dental. Through Bridgeport, we continued our work in public programs to expand the reach of affordable dental benefits through Medicaid programs. Our information management subsidiary DeniServ continued to improve our claims processing system and celebrated the successful conversion of our sister company Delta Dental of Oklahoma to the aQDen system to achieve faster, more flexible claims processing.
