“When my husband became self-employed, our dentist recommended we look into SmileChoice. We had been covered by Delta Dental for years and never had a problem with claims or customer service, so we were grateful to find affordable dental insurance from a trusted company.” - Kim Shade, Troy, MO In Missouri 2,433 dentists, about 96 percent, participate in the Delta Dental Premier Network. Again in 2010, participation in the Delta Dental PPO Network showed growth: from 41.6 percent in 2009 to 46 percent in 2010 in Missouri, and from 44 percent to 45 percent nationally. We are also proud of the progress we made in South Carolina this year, where participation in the Delta Dental Premier Network now exceeds 50 percent, and we continue to make progress with participation in the Delta Dental PPO Network. The ultimate value is realized in our unique twotiered network system. Many employer groups buy our PPO plans to take advantage of the greater savings in claims and out-of-pocket costs for their employees. Yet even as participation levels increase in the Delta Dental PPO Network, many members still visit dentists who are not in this network. Delta Dental differs from other dental benefit providers because we offer employers and members the extended protection of two levels of networks. All of our PPO plans also provide the benefits of the Delta Dental Premier Network—access to contracted fees and protection from balance billing above the contracted amount. This two-tier arrangement within our large network results in additional savings options for employers and their employees.

In 2010 we developed DeltaVision®, an affordable vision benefit plan that broadens our perspective on specialized benefits. This is a significant step that provides high-quality, affordable and comprehensive vision care with the same exceptional service that our dental customers have come to expect from us.

Just as oral health is an important part of overall health, vision health also plays a role in preventing and detecting health problems. Providing a benefit that encourages a regular schedule of preventive eye care improves employee productivity, awareness of eye safety and overall health. Our clients and our producers express a need for specialized benefits, and we know our members will appreciate the quality vision coverage that will be available in 2011.

Using prevention to serve and save
We view routine dental care as a healthy advantage for everyone, and we offer a variety of benefit options to maximize the value of our dental plans. We are developing even greater capabilities to help our clients understand their utilization as we analyze claims against the large Delta Dental data resources and then apply enhanced clinical guidance. The benefit: more relevant communications to increase awareness, improve utilization of preventive benefits and engage employees in healthier choices. MaxAdvantage Benefit Option covers preventive care and some routine diagnostic care without reducing the annual maximum benefit amount.

The extended reach of new products
More than 2,300 people who were not eligible through an employer group received dental benefit coverage in 2010, thanks to our new individual product, SmileChoice®. For the first time in our history, we are offering quality dental coverage to Missouri individuals and families who do not have access to a group dental plan. This new plan allows affordable options with the freedom to select their own dentist. It has been well received across the state, exceeding the first year’s membership goal.

Healthy Smiles, Healthy Lives Benefit is an evidence-based benefits design option that allows members to receive additional cleanings when at risk for certain conditions due to pregnancy, diabetes, periodontal disease, suppressed immune systems, cancer treatment and dialysis.
Our brush biopsy benefit allows dentists to use a simple, relatively painless procedure to detect oral cancer early, even at a pre-cancerous stage. Early detection can increase the survival rate for oral cancer from about 50 percent to 80 percent and reduce the related costs of care. 2010 Delta Dental Annual Report
