➡ colleges Chi Talk Charles Whitaker assistant professor and director of Medill’s academy of alternative Journalism, Northwestern University Where were you born and raised? i was born in Chicago and reared on the southeast side in a neighborhood called south shore. i went to school at Northwestern, then left for about six years to work in newspapers. i returned to Chicago in 1986 and have been here ever since. Five things you love about Chicago: 1 it’s so cliché, but i love the lakefront. i find the drive on lake shore Drive simply exhilarating. 2 i love the neighborhoods and the sense of community and individual character that exists in each one. 3 the food. the range of offerings here—from Greek and ethiopian to indian and traditional soul food—is extraordinary. 4 autumn. Blink and you’ll miss it, but it’s my absolute favorite time of year. the colors of fall in Chicago are breathtaking. the whole city has an orange/golden hue. 5 theater. New York City may claim to be king, but Chicago’s diverse theatrical offerings and the array of talent on display here are amazing. What do you think students gain from an urban campus setting? Cities are wonderful human laboratories. they provide great opportunities for students in all sorts of disciplines to explore a wide range of human experiences and activities. What advice do you give to people who are new to Chicago? explore the city. it has offerings for everyone. it doesn’t matter what your taste is in art, food or music, Chicago has a place to sample it. Northwestern University Higher Learning Continue your education at any one of Chicago’s many colleges and universities. The description “college town” might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Chicago, but with the abundance of higher learning institutions that dot the map, the Windy City is one of the largest—and most diverse—college towns in the country. DePaul’s 28-acre main campus is located in the heart of leafy Lincoln Park, an upscale, area filled with pretty shops, hip restaurants and expensive homes. The main campus of Loyola University—a Jesuit school that also has a campus in Rome—has a pristine spot on the northern end of the city’s lakefront, with many school buildings boasting spectacular waterfront views. Northeastern Illinois University, a public state school, sits across from a forest preserve where it’s not uncommon to spot deer and all manner of flora and fauna.
