The largest Catholic university in the country, DePaul serves more than 23,000 students at its six city and suburban campuses. It’s regularly cited in college guides for everything from having one of the most diverse student populations to being a “College with Conscience” Nearly 80 Nobel Prize winners have been associated with the University of Chicago. (The Princeton Review 2008 Best 366 College Rankings) to one of the “Schools that Rock” by a Rolling Stone guidebook rating collegiate music schools. University of Chicago and Northwestern University were ranked in the top 20 (at No. 9 and No. 14, respectively) in U.S. News & World Report’s 2008 America’s Best Colleges survey. Northwestern is known for its theater, journalism and engineering programs. The theater school faculty includes Frank Galati and Mar y Zimmerman of The Goodman Theatre. Both are Tony award winners and internationally acclaimed theater p r o fe s s i o n a l s w h o p r o d u c e wo r k for several companies as part of the city’s vibrant theater scene. Since it was founded in 1921, the university’s Medill School of Journalism has been considered one of the top journalism schools in the country, boasting an everincreasing list of alumni who have been awarded every major journalism award, from the Peabody to the Pulitzer. University of Chicago, founded by John D. There have been 79 Nobel Prize winners associated with the school— more than with any other institution of higher learning. Six Laureates are currently on the faculty, as are recipients of MacArthur Fellowships, the National Medal of Science, the Pulitzer Prize and the Booker Prize. Other notable private institutions include the School of the Art Institute and Columbia College, which both are highly regarded independent art and design schools. Kendall College and the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago are both Le Cordon Bleu culinary schools that turn out top chefs and hospitality professionals, as well as operate full-service restaurants that are open to the public. The Illinois Institute of Technology, which sits on a campus designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is known for its strong architecture and engineering programs. Standing out among public institutions is the University of Illinois-Chicago, which is the largest university in the state with a total enrollment of more than 25,000 students, and home to the biggest medical school in the country. Northeastern Illinois University is a commuter school that serves roughly 10,000 students, offering more than 80 undergraduate and graduate majors. Chicago State University, on the South Side, ser ves about 7,000 students and is consistently listed in Diverse magazine as one of the top 25 colleges for bachelor’s degrees for black students. The City Colleges of Chicago i s a n e t work of seven communit y colleges throughout the city.
