This busy north/south street is always packed with both tourists and locals, not to mention the smell of freshly made Garrett Popcorn, making the whole experience as much fun as the shopping. Many of the stores on this famous street are flagships, with hands-on displays and one-of-a-kind architecture. The Apple Store is the place to play with iPods, if you have one and want to upgrade, or if you just want to see what everyone is talking about. Nordstrom is the promised land for shoe shoppers, while the Lego store is a great place to take a break with the kids. And, even if you have enough tennies to fill a closet, you don’t want to miss Niketown. everything in between. Up the street is The Book Cellar, a good stop for guidebooks to your new hometown. The children’s story hour is popular with families in the neighborhood. Down the street is Gallimaufry Gallery, with unusual jewelry, picture frames and pottery. Weekly happenings and a diverse restaurant and bar scene make Lincoln Square a hot spot long after the shopping’s done. Bucktown/wicker pArk 2000 West, between Armitage and North avenues These two neighborhoods are often blended into one, and for the purpose of shopping, there’s no reason why not. Once an artist’s enclave, the neighborhoods now house hip condos, rehabs and townhomes, and the stores to support them. Expect to find many clothing boutiques, custom home furnishings and gift ideas galore. Fashion standouts include Apartment Number 9 and p.45, with designer rags that are hard to find elsewhere. Pagoda Red is the stop for Asian art and antiques. And, even if you don’t need a custom T-shirt, be sure to stop in the T-Shirt Deli. Every detail about the shop is charming, and you’ll likely come up with a creative slogan to sport. Southport Avenue 1400 West, between Grace Street and Belmont Avenue This Lakeview street is easily accessible by the Brown Line of the CTA, and during the week you may even find street parking, as long as there isn’t a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. Once there you’ll find three of the must-see women’s clothing stores: Red Head Boutique, Krista K and Shane. Anyone who dresses like a Desperate Housewife, or just wants to look in fashion but not like a cover girl clone, shops here first. Or, stock up on reasonably priced decorative goods at Fourth World Artisans, an international bazaar with lively crafts from every continent. oLd orchArd I-94 and Old Orchard Road Skokie, Ill., is hardly synonymous with shopping. But its outdoor mall, Westfield Old Orchard, is one of the suburb’s finest for high-end goods. Department stores include Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Macy’s and Lord & Taylor. Restoration Hardware and Crate & Barrel satisfy the homeowners, while Chico’s, Arden B, Kate Spade and Brooks Brothers help those in search of a new wardrobe to go with their new home. Movie theaters, a Barnes & Noble bookstore and many restaurants guarantee that the mall is always bustling. ■ LincoLn SquAre 2350 West, between Lawrence and Leland avenues As close to a European town square as you’ll get in Chicago, Lincoln Square is the area of the city with a sense of the Old World.
