The art deco details throughout the bar are exquisite and a photo of Al Capone, who used to frequent the place, hangs behind the grand piano. The Old Town School of Folk Music features bands from around the world in an auditorium that seats about 400. If you love rock, you’ll find no shortage of places to enjoy it. The Wicker Park and adjacent Bucktown neighborhood have a concentration of clubs including the Double Door, which features both national and regional acts. Across the street at The Note the music skews more toward funk and pop and starts hopping in the wee hours. Likewise, the famed Rush Street is still a popular place to go for drinks and socializing, though you’re likely to find more out-of-towners than Chicagoans along this strip. For reggae, head over to the Wild Hare where you can sway your hips to the hypnotic beat. If salsa is more your style, there are many clubs that offer a lesson before the band or DJ starts spinning the tunes. Rumba, an upscale Latin fusion nightclub, attracts the city’s best dancers who wear their finest clothes to elegantly strut to the pulsing Latin beat. Relax in plush maroon banquettes and enjoy tropical cocktails like rum mojitos and tasty appetizers such as the crispy empanadas and a ceviche trio. If countrywestern is your idea of a hoppin’ night out, Horseshoe Place features live bands, hot wings and Lone Star beer. 2008 Chic a go L i ving City bars and clubs also host many traditional and world music bands. There are cafés aplenty throughout the city, some that feature open mic poetry and music. Uncommon Ground has three distinct rooms and live entertainment. It’s pleasantly smoke free and serves an array of coffee, beer and wine. On Friday and Saturday nights, visit the Lobby at the Peninsula Hotel for an all-you-can-eat chocolate buffet that includes pastries, chocolate-dipped strawberries, mouthwatering truffles and exotic hot chocolates such as lavender-scented white cocoa. To see the next wave of young comedians, check out the iO Theater (formerly Improv Olympic). iO has two stages where troupes perform sketch comedies based on audience participation. At Comedy Sportz, teams of performers compete for points determined by audience applause. The most established club is Second City, where you’ll find seasoned pros performing throughout the week and a late-night session of improv after the main show. If you’re looking for something to do after dark, you’ll never run out of options.
