➡ back page DEVON AVENUE HIGHLIGHTS: • Though named by immigrants from England’s Devon (pronounced Dev-in), Devon Avenue in Chicago today is pronounced Di-VON. • More than 40 languages are spoken on Devon Avenue every day. • The 2-mile-long Devon Avenue business district is home to nearly 500 businesses. • Plan your visit for a day other than Tuesday: The majority of Devon Avenue retailers close on this day each week. • Devon Avenue is the site of Pakistan and India Independence Day parades each year. • Portions of Devon Avenue have been renamed in honor of Golda Meir, Mahatma Gandhi, Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Chicago’s Little India beckons. When you’re new to Chicago, it’s easy to be swept away by the grandeur and beauty of the Loop, but don’t overlook the city’s neighborhoods. If you want to see a mini United Nations, head to the North Side, especially Devon Avenue. Of all the varied neighborhoods in the melting pot city of Chicago, the area surrounding Devon is a constantly changing kaleidoscope of sounds, sights and smells. When you travel west to east along Devon, you’ll see various enclaves. Just east of Kedzie Avenue, you pass through an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, followed by a Russian enclave. Here, Hebrew and Russian signs predominate, advertising live kosher chickens and Jewish eateries. Keep heading toward the lake, and you’ll soon see what Devon is most famous for: its Indian and Pakistani enclaves. Here, sari shops abound, as well as Indian jewelry and video stores, giving you the chance to check out the latest Bollywood sensations. As for food, the scent of cumin, coriander and curry wafting to the sidewalk will surely entice you. South Asian groceries populate, with stalls set up along the pavement like a bazaar, so you can try your hand at at-home Indian cooking. For restaurant meals, it’s hard to go wrong: Devon Avenue restaurants face fierce competition; the sub-par eateries are weeded out very quickly. INFO Devon Avenue is an east-west street located at 6400 North in Chicago, eight miles north of the Loop.
