Locals quickly warmed to this alternative way to travel, showing their affection via nearly 500,000 rides within the first month of operation. On Dec. 4, 2004, four weeks ahead of schedule, the Hiawatha Line was completed, giving visitors a reason to get in on the 55-mile-an-hour action. The completed line runs 12 miles, starting in downtown Minneapolis’ lively Warehouse District, trekking to Minnehaha Park and both the Lindbergh and Humphrey airport terminals, then on to the Mall of America for its final stop. For mall visitors, this means that downtown dinner, theater and nightlife is just a train ride away, and Minneapolis Metrodome or Target Center visitors can avoid downtown traffic and take advantage of this fast, easy, inexpensive transit. 16 Minneapolis&Saint Paul Fall/Winter 2008 P H O T O B Y D AV E T U R N E R ; P H O T O C O U R T E S Y O F M E T R O T R A N S I T, P H O T O C O U R T E S Y O F N E M E R F I E G E R TOP PHOTO COURTESY OF MEET MINNEAPOLIS; LIGHTRAIL PHOTOS COURTESY OF METRO TRANSIT
