Minneapolis Official Visitors Guide - Fall/Winter 2007 - (Page 46) TheaTer &CulTure TheaTer/CulTure State Theatre, Minneapolis The Sound of Music at the Ordway The SOuThern TheaTer The stage of the Southern Theater is home to some of the most creative and original performances in Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The theater aims to cultivate artistic expression and does so by providing a place where local artists can have freedom to showcase innovative works of performance art. Built in 1910, the building originally served as a cultural center and theater for the Scandinavian community before re-establishing itself as a contemporary performing arts center. In its early days one could watch vaudeville shows, silent movies, and original-language Swedish plays on stage. Now the theater is home to a variety of performance arts groups like the Flying Foot Forum, a percussive dance/theater company that fuses percussion and dance with other forms of art to tell unusual tales. The theater also provides space for Mu Performing Arts, the Midwest’s foremost pan-Asian performing arts organization. Whether you want to see an innovative dance show, traditional Japanese taiko drumming or an original theater performance, the Southern Theater is the ticket. 1420 Washington Avenue S., Minneapolis, 612-340-1725, www.southerntheater.org Flying Foot Forum 46 Minneapolis&Saint Paul Fall/Winter 2008 http://www.southerntheater.org
