Minneapolis Official Visitors Guide - Fall/Winter 2007 - (Page 88) ACCOMMODATIONS Westin Minneapolis Sofitel, Bloomington Marriott City Center, Minneapolis Whether high-tech or cozy, family friendly or romantic, area hotels definitely roll out the welcome mat. W ith new luxury hotels and suburban water parks to complement the trustworthy chains and historic inns, Minneapolis-Saint Paul can accommodate any type of traveler. Families and sightseers can find comfort in hotels along the light rail or those offering shuttles for easy transportation, while traveling executives can get down to business almost anywhere as high-speed Internet and comprehensive work centers are the norm around here. Add dining, nightlife and cultural offerings on-site or nearby, and at any hotel you’ll be happy to rest your head. From the state-of-the-art Graves 601 Hotel to the (literally) artful Chambers, downtown Minneapolis offers 6,000 hotel rooms and counting for convention-goers and city lovers. Choose one of the 4,000 hotel rooms connected to the city’s 8 miles of skyways and steer clear of the street traffic as you meander in temperature-controlled comfort to the Minneapolis Convention Center, a Nicollet Mall pub or the Hennepin Theatre District. Adding 1,300 additional rooms by mid 2008, the city welcomes the luxuries of the Ivy Hotel & Residences and the Westin, and the Foshay-turned-W, set to open next spring. Saint Paul’s more than 1,500 rooms are located within walking distance to such cultural sites as the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Minnesota History Center, the Capitol and the Ordway Center for Performing 88 Arts, not to mention the oldest winter festival in the nation, the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. The recently renovated Saint Paul Hotel, originally built in 1910, offers historic luxury and fine dining, while the Crowne Plaza Riverfront Hotel provides the latest amenities, and about half of the rooms have river views. If you’re looking to stay outside city limits, you’ll find upscale hotels as well as affordable chains in the suburbs. Optimal for fast getaways to the sights up north, the Northland Inn in Brooklyn Park keeps you close to the northern suburbs’ attractions and shopping, while any of Bloomington’s 30-plus hotels put you near the Mall of America, Ikea and the MSP International Airport. Hotels in the south metro, including Apple Valley, Shakopee, Lakeville and Eagan, keep you close to favorite year-round attractions like the Minnesota Zoo and Canterbury Park and fall favorites such as the Renaissance Festival and Sever’s Corn Maze. Three popular water park hotels, each in different parts of the metro, pack in family entertainment with their uniquely themed, tunnel slidin’, splish-splashin’ fun. The Grand Rios Indoor Water Park and Ramada Hotel in Brooklyn Park, The Depot in Minneapolis and The Grand Lodge, adjacent to Water Park of America in Bloomington, get parent approval with their stories-high waterslides, group raft rides and giant swimming pools.
