Coolant system helps guarantee success Glass grinding chips are much smaller than metal chips and are difficult to separate from coolant. Paper belt or vacuum filters would not be suitable because they would require intensive maintenance and need frequent replacement. So Mägerle developed a new maintenance-free separator that removes the glass chips from the coolant supply on a continuous basis. A chiller keeps (pictured to the left) Mägerle’s unique “wraparound” hydrostatic ways contributed to achieving a roughness average of less than 80 μinch (2 μm) over the entire glass area, even without the benefit of a temperaturecontrolled grinding room By grinding the optical glass to better than 80 μinch (2 μm) Ra, the optical glass needed much less lapping, thereby reducing overall production time the cleaned coolant – and thus the work area of the machine – precisely within ± 0.2°F (±0.1° C). Another external system cools the grinding spindle motor. Together these systems help keep the workpiece within tolerance – even with grinding times in excess of thirty minutes. Even testing the modified MFP in a nontemperature controlled room, Mägerle was able to demonstrate a roughness average of less than 80 μinch (2 μm) over the entire glass area.
