Our premier award, announced each December, is the Economic Development Deal of the Year. This year, we’ve added another award to our December issue—the brand new State of the Year. Over time, we’ve refined the process of choosing winners to be as transparent, thorough, impartial, and meaningful as possible. To start with, the editors of Business Facilities do not serve as judges; instead, we draw our judges from the ranks of the top location consultants operating today. Our judges do not have a personal connection to any of the projects entered, and they do not have a financial attachment to any location or economic development group that could color their judgement. We’re proud of the fact that we require our entrants—typically economic development agencies nominating large corporate expansion projects in their area—to provide detailed financial impact projections based on one of three commonly accepted economic multiplier models. (Our State of the Year results are based on a pre-determined mathematical formula; see article on page 22.) This year had the most competitive field of entrants for the Economic Development Deal of the Year that I or our judges can recall. Entries included expansions by Canon USA, Chrysler, Fidelity, Google, Honda Aircraft Co., Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Novartis, Toyota, and Westinghouse, to name the most recognizable. Something tells me it’s going to be hard to top these results in 2008.
