Kentucky: In the Fast Lane Kentucky’s automotive plants produce some of the nation’s topselling vehicles in three important segments—passenger car (the Toyota Camry, built in Georgetown, KY), SUV (the Ford Explorer, Louisville, KY), and premium sports car (the Chevrolet Corvette, Bowling Green, KY). Ford’s popular heavy-duty F-series pickup trucks also are made there. Kentucky ranks third in total light vehicle production, placing it at “the hub of Auto Alley,” the strip of middle America that stretches from Michigan into the Deep South. In fact, 9.8% of all cars and trucks produced in the U.S. are manufactured in Kentucky. Over one million cars and light trucks were assembled in Kentucky in 2006. With two large assembly plants in Louisville, Ford also has a long and satisfying history with Kentucky. This includes up to $60 million in incentives to Ford over a 10-year period to secure a $200 million investment at the automaker’s Kentucky Truck Plant.
