INSIDE By Jack Rogers Business Facilities LiveXchange is an invitation-only event for corporate executives responsible for choosing a new location for their companies’ next facility. This month, we preview some of the high-profile speakers who will be making presentations at our 2008 LiveXchange seminars and workshops. T his year’s LiveXchange event will provide a fertile meeting ground for site selectors and senior economic developers. This unique experience will be supplemented by an all-star list of guest speakers, who will be making presentations and leading discussions on a number of hot-button issues. In this column, we introduce three of our 2008 speakers: Brooks Rainwater is the director of Local Relations at the American Institute of Architects (AIA). As director, Brooks is responsible for advancing the Institute’s and the architecture profession’s goals at the local level by promoting the AIA’s public policies and empowering local components to effectively manage their legislative, regulatory, and legal efforts. He also serves as a sustainability resource and spokesperson for the AIA. Brooks is the lead author of the report, Local Leaders in Sustainability: A Study of Green Building Programs in Our Nation’s Communities. He also has co-authored further reports in the Local Leaders series on Green Incentives and Green Counties. Brooks will be making a presentation at LiveXchange about the current state of green building in cities and counties across the country. Prior to joining Rockefeller Group in 2003, Brandi formed TradeStar Advisory Services, an international trade consultancy, and she has worked as a senior manager and area leader at KPMG LLP in Washington, DC, where she served clients on issues related to international trade compliance and cost-saving strategies. Before joining KPMG, she served for 10 years as the executive director of the National Association of Foreign-Trade Zones (FTZ). Brandi’s presentation at LiveXchange will illuminate the intricacies of establishing and growing development through FTZ. Barry B. LePatner, Esq, founder of LePatner & Associates LLP, is a recognized expert in the field of construction cost management. For three decades, Barry he has been prominent as an advisor on business and legal issues affecting the real estate, design, and construction industries. He is the head of the law firm that is one of the nation’s leading advisors to corporate and institutional clients, real estate owners, and design professionals. His new book, Broken Buildings, Busted Budgets: How to Fix America’s Trillion-Dollar Construction Industry, is a call to our nation to address the plague of construction cost overruns that results from the gross inefficiencies that exist in one of the last of the “mom and pop” industries. A nationally recognized speaker, Barry has addressed audiences on topics central to trends affecting the real estate and construction industry.
