Grain Marketing and Production Research Center: the USDA’s main facility for conducting research on measuring and controlling the quality of cereal grains throughout the grain industry. Major initiatives include study of wind erosion, ensuring grain quality and safety, and control of insect pests in the food supply. Animal Vaccines: Kansas State is an acknowledged leader in the development of animal vaccines, such as those that combat West Nile virus. This base of technologies promises to grow even more under the Kansas Economic Growth Act (KEGA). Under KEGA, funding support for bioscience research at Kansas State continues to grow, including support for the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research, located on the K-State campus. North Carolina: An Emerging Biotechnology Hub North Carolina is home to a dynamic and growing biotechnology community. It ranks third in the nation in number of biotechnology companies for the fourth consecutive year, according to Ernst and Young’s 2007 industry survey. More than 450 bioscience companies are headquartered or have operations in North Carolina, employing 55,000 people, according to the Biotechnology Center’s online companies database. Since 1984, North Carolina has B-4 invested more than $187 million in biotechnology infrastructure through the Biotechnology Center. That investment includes a range of grants and loans for young companies and education training programs. The North Carolina Community College System provides workforce training in biotechnology through its statewide BioNetwork program and BioWork course. The community colleges, along with the UNC System, the industry trade group NCBIO, the Biotechnology Center, and five biomanufacturing companies, are part of the North Carolina Biomanufacturing and Pharmaceutical Training Consortium. These activities align with North Carolina’s blueprint for biotechnology development: “New Jobs Across North Carolina: A Strategic Plan for Growing the Economy Statewide through Biotechnology.” North Carolina Touchstone Energy cooperatives is playing a major role in supporting the biotech economic development effort by delivering reliable power to more than 2.5 million members in 93 of the state’s 100 counties. As private, independent entities, the 26 cooperatives provide energy at cost to businesses and specialize in helping businesses relocate to North Carolina with a complete portfolio of economic development services. They have played a key role in bringing more than 14,600 jobs and $2.2 billion of economic development to the state. The cooperatives’ economic development team is comprised of a host of local professionals specially trained to put the resources companies need at their fingertips. These services include market research and demographic analysis from people who know North Carolina best. North Carolina Touchstone Energy cooperatives also have an inventory of business-ready industrial sites and buildings and they can assist decision makers in finding the property best suited for their operations. Businesses also have access to tools for profitable, energy-saving performance. These range from energy audit services and rate flexibility to power quality services. And, thanks to the many powerful connections of the cooperatives, assistance with financing also readily available. Biotech Gets Bigger in NJ New Jersey’s biotechnology industry continued to both grow and mature in 2007, according to the latest BioNJ industry survey. The industry expanded as measured by several important factors, with the number of public and private companies located in the state increasing beyond 2005 levels, while public companies experienced growth in the number of employees, revenues, research and development expenditures and market cap, according to New Jersey Life Sciences’ “Where Science is Life,” a survey released by BioNJ (with assistance from Ernst & Young) highlights the following recent biotech developments: • The number of biotech companies operating in the State increased to 238 in 2008 from 226 in 2006 despite a trend toward mergers and acquisitions. • The number of biotech employees working at public companies at the end of 2007 was estimated at 6,155, representing an increase of five percent over the 2005 level of 5,824 employees. • R&D expenditures at public biotech companies in 2007 were A S P E C I A L A D V E RT I S I N G S E C T I O N O F B U S I N E S S FA C I L I T I E S , B I O P H A R M , A N D P H A R M A C E U T I C A L E X E C U T I V E PHOTOS: KANSAS WHEAT COMMISSION AND KANSAS ASSOCIATION OF WHEAT GROWERS; PHOTODISC ®
