Ireland Annual Report - 2007 - (Page 14) Health Care Technologies: At the Heart of Technology and Medicine A s new technologies enable advances in health care, GTI’s expertise at the intersection of technology and medicine will allow it to be a change agent that spurs innovation in processes, treatment options and patient outcomes. This approach is aligned with the needs of Ireland’s Healthcare technology industries (Med Tech, Pharma and BioPharma), and its aspirations to become a leader in the global marketplace. GTI’s Health Care Technologies program is led by Dr. Finbar Dolan. The initial focus of the program is on developing a TeleHealthcare Technologies test bed that builds on GTI’s RFID and IPTV capabilities and on Georgia Tech’s biomedical expertise, in collaboration with industry and academic partners. The outstanding resources and expertise of GTI’s parent organizations, Georgia Tech and the Georgia Tech Research Institute, create other opportunities in the medical technology arena. The additional benefits include nano-medicine, drug delivery and human factors engineering. These robust resources will accelerate translational research and speed implementation of new technologies into the clinical setting. GTI has already facilitated collaboration between Georgia Tech biomedical engineering professor Dr. Gang Bao and Dr. Abhay Pandit of the National University of Ireland, Galway. This collaboration helped win a Science Foundation Ireland award for a strategic research cluster in functional biomedicine at NUI Galway. GTI has initially been focused on meeting the needs of industry and has developed a portfolio of project proposals with selected Irish partners. GTI’s strategic, market-focused approach is advancing further test bed capabilities in: • Strategic Development Services. This initiative seeks to position GTI to assist companies in identifying market opportunities, developing strategic research and implementation strategies, and executing research and product development programs. It is also investigating the opportunity for GTI to facilitate joint clinical research and trials between Georgia and Ireland. Combinatorial Design. This initiative is driven by the emerging importance of computational and empirical methods in the design of new products and molecular entities for biomedical applications. Using advanced design concepts, GTI would work with its research partners to develop novel sensor systems to optimize stem cell production and other processes. TeleHealthcare Technologies GTI is examining opportunities with companies, clinicians and healthcare service providers to develop convergent technology products and processes through the use of RFID and IPTV technology. The GTI research will focus on the use of these technologies to advance medical device utility as well as improvements in hospital management systems used to track inventory, patients and staff. The result will be a reduction in medical errors, improved service delivery and increased safety in the management and treatment of patients. GTI is actively investigating the creation of a unique advanced healthcare innovation research centre that will bridge the gap between the Irish and international research communities and clinical implementation. Working closely with hospitals and clinicians, the centre would serve as a development hub and test bed for generating solutions developed by industry, academic institutions and government. • 1 www.georgiatech.ie http://www.georgiatech.ie
