Ireland Annual Report - 2007 - (Page 19) Test Beds. GTI is in the process of establishing state-of-the-art RFID and IPTV test beds that will provide companies with unique opportunities to demonstrate proof-of-concept and scalable solutions for innovative product offerings. Both facilities will begin operation in 2008. Ireland, and Invest Northern Ireland, as well as from private investors in the health care sector. Outreach and Collaboration. GTI’s director and staff have traveled around the island – including Northern Ireland – to build links and explore potential collaborations with institutions of higher learning, professional organizations, and companies in the medical device, pharmaceutical, information technology, health care and energy sectors. Many have also visited GTI’s Athlone offices. In addition, GTI’s director, Dr. Krishan Ahuja, serves on the board of Athlone Institute of Technology. A partial list of contacts includes Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork, representatives of the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and of Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University, University College Dublin, NUI Galway, University of Limerick, Athlone Institute of Technology, Engineers Ireland, Digital Hub and Queens University, Belfast. Expansion. To accommodate this growth, GTI will move to a new 10,000square-foot facility in spring 2008. Engineering Excellence. GTI has assembled a team of engineers with extensive expertise in translational research backed by the resources of Georgia Tech and the Georgia Tech Research Institute. Additional personnel will be added. Sponsored Research. An international global engineering company has contracted with GTI to build a RFID test bed, providing $300,000 ($188,000) in equipment and $100,000 ($63,000) in startup funding. Follow-on contracts are expected. GTI is also engaged in negotiations with other sponsors. In addition, GTI assisted an Irish company in contracting with GTRI for a research project requiring expertise not available in Ireland. International Exchanges. GTI facilitated visits to Georgia Tech this year by NanoFab Ireland, an industry consortium, and by a health care sector trade group including representatives of the Irish Medical Devices Association, the Irish Business and Employers Confederation, and pharmaceutical and chemical companies. In addition, GTI has signed memoranda of understanding with the University of Limerick and NUI Galway that provide for the exchange of faculty and students. Collaborative Research. Under a memorandum of understanding with Atlanta-based IntelliOne Technology, GTI will help create an IPTV interface for the company’s TrafficAid personal traffic guidance system. As a result of this relationship, IntelliOne has selected Athlone as its European base. Education. GTI hosted and sponsored a conference on innovation in connection with its official opening. Further conferences, seminars and continuing education courses are planned for the future. GTI also sponsors a student award through Engineers Ireland. Philanthropic Gifts. A gift of $500,000 ($314,000) over five years from a Georgia Tech alumnus will support GTI’s IPTV effort. A donation of hardware by a major U.S. company to establish an IPTV test bed at GTI is under negotiation. In addition, GTI has received a donation for student support from Mrs. Loraine Williams, whose late husband, Thomas R. Williams, served as honorary consul for Ireland in Atlanta and was a graduate of Georgia Tech. Strategic Implementation Plan. GTI has developed an ambitious strategic plan to be implemented over the next five years. The plan includes growing the staff to 50 people, bringing additional industry partners to Ireland each year, creating strong partnerships with local and multinational companies, and conducting large scale demonstrations of advanced energy technology. By the end of the fifth year, GTI intends to become the “go-to” place for translational research and to become a globally recognized center of excellence in digital media, while offering courses taught jointly by Georgia Tech and Irish faculty. 1 Funding. GTI has received significant financial support from IDA Ireland and GTRI, in addition to sponsored research funds and philanthropic gifts. GTI is also exploring opportunities to receive research funding from Enterprise Ireland, Science Foundation www.georgiatech.ie http://www.georgiatech.ie
