F FrOM The dIreCTOr On December 13, 2007, Georgia Tech Ireland celebrated its first anniversary. As its director, I take great pride and pleasure in inviting you to review this publication, which is our first annual report. In it, you will learn more about the ambitious programs we have put into place to advance translational research in Ireland, and the progress we have made. When IDA Ireland invited the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) to establish a branch in Ireland, it was a bold move for both organizations. It fell outside of IDA’s traditional corporate focus, because as part of the Atlanta-based Georgia Institute of Technology, GTRI is a university-affiliated applied research center. Georgia Tech Ireland is a hybrid – a not-for-profit Irish company that uses its skills in applied research to help Irish companies and academic institutions move ideas out of the lab and into the marketplace. In our first year, we have dedicated considerable effort to introduce ourselves to potential partners in industry and academia, explain how we are different – and how we can help. As you will read, our efforts have already borne their first fruits. We have identified four research focus areas based on our core strengths and IDA’s requirements. They are radio frequency identification (RFID), interactive television, health care technologies, and sustainable energy. Finally, we have carefully developed a strategic implementation plan to guide our course for the next five years. In the years to come, we will build on those successes. My sincere thanks go to IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and the many corporate and academic leaders who have taken the time to meet and welcome us to Ireland.
