Mariner - Fall 2007 - (Page 5) and it echoes with the history of her tempestuous life. Mary was twice married in the abbey at Holyrood—to her second husband, the Earl of Darnley, and then to his alleged murderer, the Earl of Bothwell. And it was here that the Queen witnessed the murder of her reputed lover, David Rizzio, under the orders of her thenhusband, Lord Darnley. The wooden ceilings of the main rooms date from Mary’s time, and the monograms MR (Maria Regina) and IR (Jacobus Rex) refer to Mary and her son, James VI. The Royal Apartments can also be visited and are known for their fine plasterwork ceilings and magnificent furnishings, particularly the unrivaled collection of Brussels tapestries. “The Great Flitting.” By the 18th century, the city walls could no longer hold the booming population and it was decided to branch out into a “new town.” Designed by Scottish architect James Craig, New Town was comprised of beautiful Georgian architecture built with sandstone, leading it to be called “The Athens of the North.” The Old Town was gradually abandoned by the wealthy in favor of New Town in what was called “The Great Flitting.” A complete program of restoration began in the 1930s and today Old Town’s Royal Mile is a fascinating place to visit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of one of Europe’s most historic cities. Many restored buildings and landmarks lie along the route between the two royal residences, each with a tale of its own. In 1753, rebuilding resulted in the lower sections of some buildings being preserved for use as foundations. Some of these old homes remain along the alleyways, known as closes. At Mary King’s Close, visitors can see a re-creation of the house where she lived with her four children in the mid 17th century. Brodie’s Close was the home of Deacon Brodie, inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A respected town councilor by day, he was a notorious robber by night. Old Town is also home to Greyfriars Kirkyard, famous in part for Greyfriars Bobby, a loyal Skye terrier who remained by his master’s grave for 14 years in the mid 19th century. His statue can be seen just across the street. Look for other Europe sailing dates, itineraries and savings on pages 22–25 of the Mariner Values section.
