Mariner - Spring 2008 - (Page 6) Alaska's Ark: rarity in abundance Alaska was still a sparsely populated Russian territory when wildlife species elsewhere struggled to coexist with encroaching civilization. Benefiting from its remote isolation and the conservation knowledge gained in the Lower 48, Alaska is unique among the states in retaining nearly all of its native animals and plants in their natural diversity and abundance. Why so numerous? There are a number of factors that make our most northern state so wildlife-friendly. For one thing, Alaska is unique among the states in its geographic isolation. It’s also enormous, with a relatively small population—leaving lots of space for wildlife. And much of that land remains primeval bush country that’s difficult to get to. What’s more, the U.S. government had the foresight to set aside much of this remote state for preservation, giving it protection that would have been almost impossible to pass in more densely populated states. In fact, Alaska contains more than half of the nation's designated wilderness area (Denali National Park alone covers more land than the entire state of Massachusetts), making Alaska the perfect animal retreat. This, plus a little luck, has led Alaska to have one of the shortest lists of endangered and threatened species of all the states.
