SUNDAY, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM ACRL - ANSS The Aftermath of Katrina and Rita: The Effects on Libraries, People, and Neighborhoods (ACRL/ANSS) A scholar, a documentary filmmaker and a librarian will discuss the consequences of hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the people and neighborhoods of Louisiana. The speakers will explore how the residents of the region responded not only to the estrangement but also the ways communities began to rebuild. Learn about the process of hiring and evaluating a library director, and specifics related to candidate search, interviewing, and welcoming the new director, as well as ongoing evaluation of a library director. This informal coffee klatch will give you an opportunity to meet authors who have appeared on one of YALSA’s six annual selected lists or have received one of YALSA’s five literary awards. Librarians will sit at a table and every 3 or 4 minutes, a new author will arrive at your table to talk! ALCTS - PARS Planning for the Worst: Disaster Preparedness and Response in High-Density Storage Facilities While disaster planning in libraries is well established, very few libraries have plans specific to the challenging environment of high-density storage. Simple activities such as removal and tracking of materials become more complicated by barcoded storage trays on 30+ foot high shelves. This program will focus on current disaster research ranging from fire protection and recovery, recovery in shared repository environments, case studies of recovery from water disasters, and perspectives on recovery from nonwater events.
