ACRL All That Jazz: The Rhythms of Creating an Academic-Public Library ILS Consortium (ACRL) Patrons demand more service from our library catalogs, while administrators demand a maximized return on investment. Can libraries continue to meet both needs? In Vigo County, Indiana, public and private academic libraries joined with a public library to form a new library consortium. We’ll discuss the decision-making process, the financial and political advantages for partnership, the technical challenges, and the unexpected complexities we stumbled across. Bring your questions! Speakers: Alberta Comer, Indiana State University, Dean of Library Services; Tim Gritten, Indiana State University, Interim Associate Dean ALA - APA MBA for Librarians Series – Leadership II This program will demystify innovation and risk taking concepts and skills and illustrate their library applications. Too often librarianship is risk averse. Libraries must embrace a ready, fire, aim outlook and grasp true innovative processes. Pulling best practices from the experiences of successful entrepreneurs like Catarina Fake (Flickr) and Reed Hastings (Netflix) the program will engage in audience discussion of how we can truly innovate solutions to our most pressing problems. The goal: Manage smarter. Track: Administration and Leadership Subtrack: Leadership & Management Speakers: Debbie Moss, Orange County Library System AFL - REFORMA ALA-CORS How I Landed My First Librarian Position, And What I Did ‘In Between’ New library professionals have been particularly affected by today’s economic climate. Facing a tough job market, many are unemployed, underemployed, or employed outside the field. This program features panelists that have successfully leveraged extended periods of job seeking into fantastic job offers. Current students and recent graduates will receive honest, hardhitting advice on how to maximize their “in between” time, as well as glean inspiration from peers that have finally landed their first librarian position. Maybe it has already been done: Locating existing data for planning, assessment and advocacy. Description: All libraries need to collect data for planning, assessment and advocacy. Instead of starting from scratch every time we need numbers, we could use existing data sources such as from NCES, PLDS, IMLS, ALA, and the US Census. This program will present information about publicly available data sources useful to all types of libraries and for all levels of the organization.
