In this interactive program, both experienced participants and newbies will glean great new ideas about activities that keep Teen Advisory Board members excited about each new meeting. Tips on organizing a year’s worth of meetings and meaningfully increasing a TAB’s value to the library will also be addressed.

Locked Up! Go Inside a Juvenile Detention Center
Tour Los Angeles County’s Central Juvenile Hall. Talk with experts who provide library services to juveniles behind bars. Learn the difference between detained and adjudicated, between jail and prison; how the library fits into institutional culture; how the poulation defines the library services provided. Talk with incarcerated youth to hear what the facillity library means to them. The program goal is to provide knowledge, resources and contacts for anyone interested in this vital service. Get Them Talking About Books!: Using Protocols to Assist Students with Making Book Choices and Developing a Reading Plan (AASL)
Book choice is extremely important to students as they develop as critical and engaged readers. This session will introduce several protocols that participants can use to engage students in sharing their favorite book choices with one another and assist them to develop a reading plan for the school year. A model for booktalking will be introduced and practiced by participants as they walk through several protocols with the facilitator.
